Yarrow

(Achillea millefolium)

Yarrow is diaphoretic meaning that it causes perspiration. It is known as a stimulant. Oil extracted from Yarrow is used to make medicine for headaches. Boiled Yarrow leaves, its extract or in powder form alone,  or along with other herbs is given in conditions where diuretic results are required. Its cream is good to treat skin rash.

 In some cases, when it is difficult to stop bleeding in diabetic patients, Yarrow is given in various forms. Yarrow is a good treatment for excessive gases in the stomach and it prevents its formation. Boiled Yarrow leaves are given to patients to cure various stomach upsets and pain.  This extract is also given to help digestion. Chewing Yarrow leaves for some time helps relieve toothaches as it is a mild local anesthetic.  For this purpose it is good either to use its liquid extract as mouthwash, or keep a few leaves under the effected tooth and avoid swallowing the saliva in large quantities. It is a good practice to keep spitting to avoid overdose.

It is given to patients with in kidney problems, but correct dose and usage must be studied well or should be taken under supervision of a professional healthcare practitioner. Yarrow leaves mixed with cold water is applied to burns for cure and relief. Professional herbalists give Yarrow juice to patients with weak or disturbed digestion, gallbladder stone, Insomnia, lack or loss of appetite, menstrual disorders and cramps and chest pain.

Internal use of its juice is also said to be good to stop bleeding due to piles. It is a good blood purifier. For this purpose fresh tender leavers are squeezed or ground with a little water to obtain its liquid extract. This extract is given to patients after filtering. Patient is asked to take two table spoons of this extract two to three times daily in some liquid like orange juice, soup or milk for several weeks. This simple remedy purifies the blood and cures many ailments resulting from such impurities. Please remember that this is adult dose which should be adjusted with age accordingly.  The same liquid can also be given to patients who has recently recovered from a long illness. This juice helps the body recover its loss energies.  Dried powdered can also be given by swallowing about half tea spoon with milk or water two to three times daily.  

Like with all medicine, please do not depend on what you read about herbs in books or in websites. It is always a good practice and precaution to consult your doctor especially if you are planning to use the herb for long period.
