Marshmallow
(Althaea officinalis)
Marshmallow is diuretic and heals wounds. It has been mentioned in old medical text that one cup of marshmallow juice is an immune tonic. Name of this plant comes from Greek “altho”, which means “healing”. Early Egyptians are known to have used this herb. The roots are said to be rich in Glycosides.
The flowers are not commercially common, but can be easily grown indoors, and are used for in cough syrups. Root of the plant is used externally for treating wounds, skin rash and burns. Internally it is mainly used to treat infections of the mucus membranes, throat infections, intestinal ulcers, urinary and bladder infections. Leaves are used to remedy sore throat, cough and bladder infections.
Syrup of the herb is prepared in water and honey for above uses. Decoction is prepared from the leaves which are used for throat and bladder infections. Tincture is good for infections of the mucus membranes. A paste or ointment prepared from its roots is applied to wounds and infections.
The following ointment is a fantastic remedy for skin rashes and wounds:
Take 50 grams lanoline, 50 grams of wax, 300 grams of liquid paraffin mixed with 300 grams of marshmallow root. Mix the ingredients well and use for conditions mentioned above.
