Bladderwrack

(Fucus vesiculosus)

Bladderwrack is also commonly known as Seaweed. It is said to be native to some areas in Vietnam where its many species are found. Northern shores of the Baltic ocean are also said to have rich cultivation of the herb.

Besides having numerous health benefits, Bladderwrack is used as a culinary herb in many parts of Asia. It is consumed raw as salad, cooked into soups and main courses.  Bladderwrack contains some amount of Iodine, for this reason it is used among other herbs for treatment of goiter. Due to its antitussive properties it is formed into syrup to treat cough. It has been used traditionally to cure many types of stomach ailments and piles.

Various laboratory studies and tests show that Bladderwrack used with other suitable herbs is good for weight reduction. It is also good diabetes as it reduces blood glucose level. See weed (common name of Bladderwrack) also stops the spread of cancer cells. Although this claim is supported by some test on humans and animals, its correct method of consumption and ideal dose must be understood and researched. Bladderwrack is a known anti-coagulant and has some anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It is a good anti-oxidant herb when used with other herbs.

Some studies suggest that Iodine contents of Bladderwrack are quite high. For this reason, if used for prolonged period or if taken in high doses may result in symptoms known in high intake of Iodine. In simple it may have adverse effect on the thyroid gland.  In addition, it may also cause stomach upsets, headache and some skin conditions. Since it causes reduction of blood sugar level, patients with conditions of hypoglycemia should take it after consulting their physician. Due to Its anti-coagulant properties like Aspirin, patients with blood abnormalities should take Bladderwrack under professional supervision. Its use in pregnancy and lactation is not recommended due to presence of some elements like Iodine, which may cause health problems to the child.

While studying material about herbs, pay special attention to side effects of herbs. Not all herbs are always good for everything. They must be understood well before use.
