Black cohosh

(Cimicifuga racemosa)

Black cohosh is also known as Actaea macrotys. It has several other names as well. Use of this plant in pregnancy should be avoided especially in high doses. Better yet it should be used under supervision of a professional, because it induces abortion. Because of its antioxidant properties it is used alone or along with other herbs for the same purpose. It is used in various forms to relieve muscular pains and contractions.

This herb is used mainly to treat female problems. It is said to be an alternative to hormone therapy. It also cures many symptoms related to menopause. Some of these symptoms include excessive sweating, increased heartbeat (palpitation).  It is also used for mood disturbances related to menopause and hot flashes.

Prolonged intake of Black cohosh is reported to be unsafe. For this reason it is good either to discontinue its use every couple of weeks for few days or use under supervision of a professional healthcare provider. Use of Black cohosh in patients having history of certain health conditions, especially Cancer should be avoided.

At this point let me make clear that the common myth that herbs or herbal medicines have no side effects is wrong. Professional herbalists have the right toxicity information about each herb. They usually add other suitable herbs to mark the undesirable effects and make it safer to use. They are also trained to provide antidotes and treat patient who got sick as result of taking a poisonous herb.

Its use in migraine has been proved through history but it seems to be effective in migraine and headache conditions resulting from menopause. Studies proved its effectiveness headaches and migraines due to disturbed periods.

Looking back at its history, Black cohosh has been used for a wide range of health conditions.  Black cohosh or its extracts in various forms are used as remedy. It is used as an aphrodisiac and is found effective in loss of appetite.  It is used in many herbal cough suppressant formulas. Being a strong abortifacient it is given to the expectant mother to ease childbirth.  This use of the herb should not be carried out without a professional.
Black cohosh tea sweetened with tea or honey is used to help relieve symptoms of monthly periods.  It also helps reduce rheumatic and joint pains. It is said to reduce cholesterol in the body, cures cough and muscular pains.
