Agrimony

(Agrimonia spp.)

Agrimony has been mentioned in Greek and Ayurvedic texts to have cold, dry temperament.  Like Yarrow, Agrimony also has astringent properties and has a bitter taste. Among the constituents are Tannic acid, Silica, aromatic oils, Favonoids, some minerals, Vitamin B and K.
Agrimony has some antiviral properties. It is an astringent, diuretic, repairs damaged tissues, stops bleeding and stimulates production of bile. It has astringent affect on the mucus membranes and helps stop bleeding. One of its species A. Eupatoria has been used to cure open wounds since the Anglo-Saxon times. This has been used successfully to cure bullet wounds in ancient wars. Another species of the same plant has been used in China for the same purpose.

Dried aerial parts of this plant are used as antiviral drug. It is also used to kill and discharge tapeworms, cure malaria and dysentery and Trichomonas vaginalis. Agrimony is a good cure for diarrhea and urinary tract infections.

Agrimony clears the body of its toxins, cures productions of phlegm. It is good for treatment of skin rashes and wounds.
Agrimony decoction is a remedy of diarrhea. Due to its mild nature, it can be safely given to kids for the same purpose.  Lactating mothers can take this decoction safely, to treat breastfeeding babies having diarrhea.

Tincture is actively used to treat production of excessive phlegm and mucus. This tincture is also good for treatment of urinary infections and excessive periods.

For migraines immerse clean piece of cloth or cotton in its decoction and frequently apply to the head. Use this decoction to wash skin rash, open wounds and wounds resulting from varicose veins.
10 grams of the herb, diluted in 500 ml of water is said to be good for conjunctivitis. Use the same liquid as a gargle to treat throat infections and runny noses.

In Chinese medicine, its boiled extract is used to cure bleeding from the uterus and some infections of the digestive track.
Due to its astringent quality, the herb should not be administered to those suffering from constipation.
